All About Sony And Myself…

The Sony Connect experiment is about to get, well, disconnected: it will be winding down its music and video services in the next couple of months, and focus on servicing the Playstation group on the technical needs.

Steve Banfield, the head of the Sony Connect division, will be leaving in the next few weeks, and Tim Schaaff and Fumi Kanagwa from Sony corporate will now run what’s left of Connect engineering team. The remaining team of around 80 will be devoted support Playstation.

Sony Sonic Stage Software won’t continue. With the introduction of the Media Manager Software for Sony Ericsson Walkman Phones in the next couple of months, Sony itself will use this product for their digital audio players as well. Beside of course for the PSP, too.

It’s unclear if ATRAC support will be discontinued in future as Sony pushes MP3 and AAC forward and claim that these two formats are the ones with the brightest future.

Sure, that Sony will move to close integration of their Playstation/PSP products, DAP products and Sony Ericsson Walkman Phones so that you finally are able to share content between all devices. Perhaps this might be the strongest answer to Apple’s strategy.

ich möchte Euch folgende Tipps und Tricks mit auf den Weg geben. Wenn ihr ein Sony Ericsson W880i und ein Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970 Stereo Bluetooth Headset betreibt, solltet ihr dies beachten:

• Reichweite: Das W880i hat ein Bluetooth-Reichweitenproblem. Die Sendeleistung ist nicht sonderlich stark. Hinzu kommt, dass das W880i die Musik in Originalqualität und mit Originalcodec an das HBH-DS970 streamt. Der Stereo Bluetooth Standard A2DP unterstützt das auf freiwilliger Basis und Sony Ericsson hat nicht gezögert, dieses Feature den neuesten Walkman Handys und dem HBH-DS970 mitzugeben. Daher klingt diese Kombination auch hervorragend und macht auch die Verbesserungen in Bitrate und Codec glaubhaft deutlich.

  Desto höher die Bitrate ist, desto geringer ist die Reichweite zwischen dem Handy und dem Headset. Probiert es aus! Bei 320Kbit /sek. ist schon nach 30cm Schluß. Also W880i in die hintere Hosentasche stecken ist nicht, sonst kommt es zu Aussetzern.

• Codec und Datenraten - Musikqualität: Das W880i und das HBH-DS970 klingen außergewöhnlich gut, es sei denn, wenn man sie auch anständig füttert. Das W880i klingt mit AAC Files klar besser als mit MP3s. Selbst bei 320kbit/sek. im MP3 Format klingt die Musik etwas basslastig und belegt, so als wäre sie durch einen Equalizer gejagt worden. Keine Regel ohne eine Ausnahme: Sonys Playstation 3. Womit wir beim nächsten Punkt wären.
• Sony Playstation 3 Music Station: Sonys Playstation 3 empfiehlt sich als Musikserver. Einfach eine Tastatur anschließen und schon geht’s los. Titel, Interpret, Album Cover, Genre und vies mehr leicht und einfach erfaßt, oder bereits vorhandene Einträge von CDDB editiert. Dann fix auf den Memory Stick des W880i kopiert. Die PS3 rippt MP3s mit einem wirklich wundervollen Encoder im 2-Pass Verfahren in mehrfacher Geschwindigkeit mit 320Kbit/sek. variabler Datenrate und zeigt die Ausnahme der Regel: MP3s können wirklich so gut klingen wie AAC Files, auch auf dem W880i. Und übrigens: Vergeßt LAME - die PS3 kann’s wirklich um Längen besser!
• PCM WAVE / Original CD Qualität mit dem W880i: Ja, tatsächlich, das geht auch! Man kann eine CD direkt auf den Memory Stick des W880i ziehen. Ohne Komprimierung. Egal ob über Windows Explorer, CDEx oder gewisse  “audiophile” Ripper. Damit bekommt man gewaltig was auf die Ohren. Klar hat man in WAVE Files keine Tags wie zum Beispiel in MP3s, also kein Cover und keine Titelanzeige, aber was solls! Und es läßt sich auch so über Bluetooth streamen. Allerdings: Hier bewegen wir uns an der absoluten Grenze des Bluetooth 2.0 Standards. Die Datenrate von1,4Mbit plus Fehlerkorrektur-Daten und Protokoll-Overhead will erstmal bewältigt werden, dazu kommt die geringe Bluetooth-Sendeleistung des W880i.. Freunde, bewegt Euch nicht zu stark
• Andere Bluetooth-Geräte gleichzeitig betreiben:Bitte nicht! Egal ob ihr nur eine Bluetooth-Armbanduhr oder einen Laptop zusätzlich mit dem W880i koppelt: Die maximal verfügbare Datenrate müssen sich alle Geräte gemäß Bluetooth-Standard teilen. Es gibt nicht so was wie eine “dynamische” Vergabe. Also wenn ihr zwei weitere Geräte zusätzlich zum Headset koppelt, dann bekommt das Headset nur noch 1/3 der maximal möglichen Datenrate zugewiesen. WAVE, 320Kbit/sek. MP3 oder ähnliche Scherze sind damit Vergangenheit. Das W880i konvertiert in diesem Fall die Musik in SBC 128kbit/sek. on-the-fly fürs Headset um. Wie das klangliche Ergebnis jetzt ausfällt, könnt ihr Euch ausmalen.

Finally, it’s here. The new Sony Playstation Portable has arrived. It will be in stores throughout USA for abou 199,99 $ including a 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo and the Game “Daxter” when choosing the silver version. These are the key features:

• 33% lighter (96gr less) than the original PSP
• 19% more slim
• better battery performance
• faster loading and response times
• TV out for direct connectivity
• 3 colors: black, silver and white

All the technology within is the same, no upgrade. As the new PSP would be shipped with the latest firmware it runs at 333MHz from the start.

The TV out port will be the same as the headphones port and an analogue one. It’s possible to output videos at full PAL resolution at 16:9 or 4:3 to the TV from the Memory Stick Media (by using MPEG4 AVC sourcs). Game output will be scaled to full PAL resolution anamorphic 16:9. The processing speed of the PSP is, of course, not enough (even not at 133MHz) to process MPEG4 AVC HD videos.
