All About Sony And Myself…

The format war has turned into a format death watch.

Toshiba is widely expected to pull the plug on its HD DVD format sometime in the coming weeks, reliable industry sources say, after a rash of retail defections that followed Warner Home Video’s announcement in early January that it would support only the rival Blu-ray Disc format after May.

Officially, no decision has been made, insists Jodi Sally, vp of marketing for Toshiba America Consumer Products. “Based on its technological advancements, we continue to believe HD DVD is the best format for consumers, given the value and consistent quality inherent in our player offerings,” she said.

But she hinted that something’s in the air. “Given the market developments in the past month,” she said, “Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly in light of our recent price reductions on all HD DVD players.”

Immediately after the Warner announcement, the HD DVD North American Promotional Group canceled its Consumer Electronics Show presentation. The following week, data collected by the NPD Group revealed Blu-ray took in 93% of all hardware sales for that week.

Toshiba subsequently fired back, drastically cutting its HD DVD player prices by as much as half, effective Jan. 15. But a hoped-for consumer sales surge never materialized; retail point-of-sale data collected by the NPD Group for the week ending Jan. 26 still showed Blu-ray Disc players ahead by a wide margin, 65% to 28%.

Software sales have declined as well. The latest Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales data show the top-selling Blu-ray Disc title for the week, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s “Across the Universe,” sold more than three times as many copies the week ending Feb. 10 as the top HD DVD seller, Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s “Elizabeth: The Golden Age.” Blu-ray Disc titles also accounted for 81% of all high-def disc sales for the week, with HD DVD at just 19%.

Toshiba had been pitching its discounted HD DVD players toward the standard DVD crowd as well as high-def enthusiasts, noting in its ad message that the new players would make DVDs look a lot better as well. And as a last-ditch effort, the company ran an ad during the Super Bowl — a 30-second spot that reportedly cost $2.7 million.

But in the end, sources say, the substantial loss Toshiba is incurring with each HD DVD player sold — a figure sources say could be as high as several hundred dollars — coupled with a series of high-profile retail defections has driven the company to at last concede defeat.

“An announcement is coming soon,” said one source close to the HD DVD camp. “It could be a matter of weeks.”

Microsoft is the other big player in the HD DVD equation. Last fall when Paramount Home Entertainment announced it was dropping its dual-format strategy and would release titles only in HD DVD, giving that side a brief resurgence, a pitch to journalists for interviews came from a Microsoft email address.

Several phone calls to Kevin Collins, Microsoft’s normally accessible “HD DVD evangelist,” were not returned. Nor were calls to Ken Graffeo, the Universal Studios Home Entertainment executive who doubles as co-president of the HD DVD North American Promotional Group.

When Warner abandoned HD DVD in January, the format was left with just two of the six major studios backing it, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment. Blu-ray support among independents is rising. ADV Films, Tai Seng Entertainment, Topics Entertainment and National Geographic have all confirmed they are going Blu-ray exclusive, while more than one indie that was releasing titles just on HD DVD, including Surround Records and Opus Arte, will now offer Blu-ray as well.

This week, two key retailers, Best Buy and Netflix Inc., both got off the fence and threw their support behind Blu-ray exclusively, citing widespread studio support and consumer preference. Both companies said Warner’s decision was a turning point in their strategies.

“We’ve listened to our customers, and we are responding,” said Best Buy president and COO Brian Dunn.

Netflix spokesperson Steve Swasey said it appeared the format war had been won by Blu-ray for the benefit of everyone.

“We wanted to put an exclamation point behind that,” he said.

Industry observers are closely watching Amazon, but there’s been no movement, other than a 50% off sale for 150 HD DVD titles, including “Transformers,” “Zodiac” and “Stardust.”

Blockbuster Inc. last summer already decided to offer only Blu-ray Disc titles at its company-owned rental stores.

ATTENTION: Due to the maximum supported height of the harddisk slot it’s not possible to insert the latest 500GB 2,5″ harddisks!

Wie es scheint, gibt es aktuell in der Sony Playstation 3 einen schweren AVCHD Bug. Dieser wurde mir von Sony Computer Entertainment bestätigt.

Folgendes:

Werden von einem AVCHD Camcorder, egal ob von Sony, Canon oder Panasonic, einzelne AVCHD aus dem Streams-Ordner des Memory Sticks, der Festplatte oder der SD Card auf die Festplatte der Sony Playstation 3 kopiert ist die Bildqualität deutlich schlechter als wenn man direkt vom AVCHD Camcorder bzw. Camcorder Medium abspielen würde.

Begründung:

Die Sony Playstation 3 benötigt für eine ordnungsgemäße Wiedergabe von AVCHD auch alle weiteren Ordner und Dateien, die beispielsweise neben den Streams auf dem Memory Stick vorhanden sind.

Lösung:

Vorerst komplette Backups vom Memory Stick oder der SD Card ziehen, auf Blu-Ray oder DVD und dann von dort über die Sony Playstation 3 wiedergeben. Kunden, die einen Festplatten-Camcorder verwenden sollten am besten nur soviel aufnehmen wie auf eine Blu-Ray 50GB paßt.

Das ist wirklich ärgerlich. Ich hatte mir erhofft, dass ich wirklich einzelne Takes oder Streams vom AVCHD Camcorder auf die 500GB Festplatte der Playstation 3 kopieren könnte und war schon auf und dran meinen HDV Camcorder in Ebay zu stellen. Nun bin ich aber besser beraten, meine Videos zunächst vom HDV Camcorder auf PC Fesplatte zu ziehen und dann die HDV MPEG2 Dateien auf die Playstation 3 Festplatte zu bringen. Dieses ist 1:1 wie das original.
  

Sony Germany has verified that the 16GB Memory Stick Pro Duo will be available in Germany by 01st of March 2008. The lastest Memory Stick has got a “Mark 2″ spec, claiming it is suitable for recording high bitrate AVCHD video with no hassle.

It will be shipped with an included USB card reader for about 200 Euros.

Sony Germany has announced that a 16GB Memory Stick Pro Duo will be available throughout Europe for about 220 Euros in March 2008. This Memory Stick Pro Duo will be compatible with the Sony Playstation Portable and the Sony PS3 as well as all 2007/2008 Cybershot-Cameras and Handycams.

Der Formatkrieg scheint entschieden, denn Warner Bros. hat heute offiziell verkündet, dass sie Blu-Ray bereits ab Mai 2008 exklusiv unterstützen.

In einer Pressemitteilung hat Warner-Chef Barry Meyer mitgeteilt, dass man dazu beitragen wolle, den Formatkrieg zu beenden und damit Blu Ray schnell zu einem gewinnbringendem Geschäft katapultieren wolle. Gleichzeitig würde auch die Verunsicherung der Verbraucher beendet sein.

Damit dominiert die Blu-Ray-Disc eindeutig den Markt. Das Überleben der HD-DVD als Konkurrenzmedium ist damit arg in Frage gestellt.

Mittlerweile ist auch auf Warners Homepage eine offizielle Pressemitteilung erschienen.

Zudem ist auch offiziell bestätigt worden, dass New Line Cinema mit Warner ins Blu-Ray-Lager wechseln wird.

New Line Cinema hatte in den USA bereits vor der Entscheidung von Warner die Titel auf HD-DVD gegenüber Blu-ray verspätet veröffentlicht, wobei sogar einige Titel vorab Blu-Ray exklusiv veröffentlicht wurden, wie Hairspray, Shoot ´em up und Rush Hour 3.

Damit ist es sehr fraglich, ob Herr der Ringe überhaupt noch auf HD-DVD erscheinen wird.

Direkt nach dem Wechsel von Warner hat sich “Transformers”-Regisseur Michael Bay sehr positiv über diese Entwicklung geäussert.

In einem Interview sagte er, dass Blu-Ray einfach besser sei und er behauptete, dass HD-DVD “langsam aber sicher zugrunde gehen werde”. “Habt Vertrauen, Leute, aber ich bin mir sicher, dass Transformers eines Tages auf Blu-Ray erscheinen wird”, so Bay.

In vielen Fachzeitschriften, allen voran das deutsche Video Magazin, wurde immer wieder die grandiose Klangqualität gelobt, während die Bildqualität und Tonqualität des DVD/CD Players sehr bescheiden ausfiel.

Angeblich ist die neue PS3 der Wunsch tausender befragter Kunden. Mehr als 90% aller potentiellen Kunden haben sich bislang keine PS3 gekauft, weil sie die ganzen Media Center Funktionen nicht bräuchten. Mehr als 90% aller potentiellen Kunden wollen nur spielen. Weiter nichts, keine Blu-Ray-Filme gucken, keine DVDs high-ending upscalen und kein Dolby Digital HD Sound über die High-End-Anlage ausgeben.

Zwei Herzen schlagen in meiner Brust. Auf der einen Seite kann ich Sony verstehen und die Gründe nachvollziehen, auf der anderen Seite bin ich selbst Besitzer der PS3 60GB und ich habe mir sie gerade als Media Center gekauft und in zweiter Linie zum Spielen.

Wie mir Freunde bei Sony erzählten gibt es folgende Unterschiede:

• 40GB Festplatte
• 2 USB Anschlüsse
• Kein Card Reader
• Keine PS2-Kompatibilität
• Anderes Mainboard-Layout
• Billigere Mainboard-Bestandteile, schlechtere Bild- und Tonqualität für Blu-Ray-Filme
• Kein DVD-Upscaling
• Zukünftig nur auf der PS3 40GB Cell Processor mit <65nm-Strukturen, leiser Lüfter,
  geringere Leistungsaufnahme
• Zwei Firmware-Versionen
• 60GB Version wird weitergepflegt

 Also Sony will die PS3 als “Zockergerät” positionieren, einfach nur für Leute, die in High-Definition spielen wollen. Und die Kritik, dass 40GB nicht ausreichen würden für all die Filme in HD aus dem Playstation-Store läßt Sony nicht gelten: Die meisten Leute wären nicht daran interessiert, HD-Fernseher hätten in Europa noch nicht den Durchbruch.

Sony will die Reaktion der Leute testen. Ob und wie viele Leute sich melden, die eben auch ein High-End-Media-Center wünschen.

Aus sehr gut informierten Kreisen weiß ich, dass Sony sogar eine noch High-Endigere und edlere Version der Playstation 3 in der Schublade hat - zu einem Preis von fast 1000 Euro. Man wäre bereit zweigleisig zu fahren. Jetzt liegt es an den Kunden.

If you connect your PS3 via Optical Cable or HDMI to your Receiver you might be able to enjoy upscaled CD quality songs.

Just enable the “44.1KHz/88.2KHz&196.4KHz” Option in the Audio Menu under Settings and ensure that your Receiver is equipped with a 24bit 196.4KHz digital-to-analogue converter. Play around with the Filter/Bitmapping option.

You’ll find the playback much better than before with a better spatial experience, a greater punch and more authentic mid-tones for great vocals.

The Sony PS3 is a great audio-player - “listen and see…”.
